Early Life and Education

Raila Odinga was born to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the first Vice President of Kenya. He attended primary school in Kisumu and later proceeded to Maranda High School. For his higher education, Raila went to the Herder Institute in Germany before joining the Technical School of Magdeburg, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1970.

Raila Odinga Career and Political Beginnings

Upon returning to Kenya, Raila worked at the University of Nairobi as a lecturer and later established East African Spectre Limited, a company dealing in the manufacturing of liquid petroleum gas cylinders.

Raila Odinga’s political journey began in the 1980s. He was detained without trial for six years (1982-1988) following a coup attempt against President Daniel arap Moi’s government. His incarceration made him a significant figure in the fight for multi-party democracy in Kenya.

Political Achievements

  • 1992: After his release, Raila became a member of the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD) and later the National Development Party (NDP).
  • 2001: He was appointed Minister for Energy.
  • 2002: Raila played a crucial role in forming the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which successfully ousted the ruling party, KANU, from power in the general elections.
  • 2005: He opposed the draft constitution proposed by President Mwai Kibaki, leading to its rejection in a national referendum.
  • 2007: Ran for presidency under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The election results were contested, leading to widespread violence. A coalition government was formed with Raila as the Prime Minister (2008-2013).
  • 2013 and 2017: Ran for presidency but lost to Uhuru Kenyatta. The 2017 elections were highly controversial, leading to another political standoff.
  • 2018: In a historic handshake, Raila and President Kenyatta agreed to work together, aiming to foster national unity and peace.
