HELB Opens Loan Application Window for KMTC Students Nationwide

HELB opens loan application window for KMTC students across Kenya as the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) welcomes a fresh disbursement of KSh 500 million. This initiative restores critical funding for medical trainees after budget cuts last year, enabling both newcomers and continuing students to apply for tuition support from now until June 24, 2025.

Funding Restored Through Supplementary Budget

The loan facility was unlocked after the National Treasury released KSh 500 million in the April 2025 supplementary budget. HELB is now accepting applications to support certificate and diploma students in medical training.

Application Process: Who, How & When

  • Eligible students: First-time and returning KMTC trainees across all public campuses.
  • First-time applicants: Must register and apply via the HELB Student Portal at HELB.co.ke, using a National ID and personal mobile number—then upload required documents and complete the financial literacy course.
  • Returning applicants: Can apply via the HELB mobile app (Google Play) or by dialing *642#. Phones used must be registered in their own names.
  • Deadline: June 24, 2025—students are urged to apply early to ensure their funding arrives promptly.

Impact on Medical Training

KMTC CEO Dr Kelly Oluoch highlighted that the absence of HELB loans last year strained many students, putting training continuity at risk. The reinstated funding will ease the burden and allow future public sector health professionals to complete their education uninterrupted.

Geo-Relevance and National Importance

  • All corners of Kenya: From urban Nairobi to rural campuses in Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa, and Nakuru, thousands of medical students stand to benefit.
  • National health strategy: With a critical healthcare worker shortage nationwide, funding KMTC students directly contributes to Kenya’s capacity to respond to health emergencies and meet universal care goals.

Key Reminders for Applicants

  1. Use your own mobile number for HELB registration.
  2. Provide accurate information—HELB does not charge application fees and warns against fraudulent agents.
  3. After submission, applicants receive a PDF copy via email and can track status through the portal or app.
