{"id":3442,"date":"2019-12-14T18:42:16","date_gmt":"2019-12-14T18:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/?p=3442"},"modified":"2024-04-21T22:17:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-21T22:17:41","slug":"omar-al-bashir-sentenced-in-a-sudanese-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/omar-al-bashir-sentenced-in-a-sudanese-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Omar al Bashir sentenced in a Sudanese court"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<p>A Sudanese court has found former\npresident Omar al Bashir guilty of corruption and illegal possession of foreign\ncurrency and sentenced him to two years in a correctional facility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Sudanese laws, anyone\nabove 70 years cannot be sent to a regular prison, and the former head of state\nis 75 years old.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While undergoing trial, Al Bashir was\nconfined at the Kobar Maximum Security Prison. He will still go back to Kobar\nbecause there are more pending charges against him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extra charges to be read against\nhim are&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The 1989 coup plot that brought him to power <\/li><li>The 2019 crackdown that left tens of protesters dead. And although under the Sudanese\nlaw, a death penalty excludes persons above 70 years, it could apply to such\nsenior citizens depending on the circumstances, nature, and the magnitude of\nthe crime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bashir was overthrown in April 2019 after a protracted popular uprising. Under his regime, threats, arbitrary arrests, and torture were the order of the day, and all children born at the beginning of his administration only knew freedom in abstract terms. And Press freedom was virtually non- existent under his iron-fisted regime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, he has been languishing in\nthe same facilities where he notoriously locked away and tortured his enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is alleged that to quell the\nuprising, his soldiers detained and raped the women who were the majority\n(about 70 %) as compared to male protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Bashir\u2019s ouster, the\nTransitional Military Council took over the country\u2019s leadership, promising a\nthree year transition period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Civilians were, however, adamant and continued agitating for the immediate restoration of civilian rule.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube
