She hailed from a herding community known as Gonaquasub of the KhoiKhoi tribe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was born on a colonial piece of land where her parents were probably employed. Her father, who was a cattle driver, died when she was a teenager, although her mother had passed on much earlier while she was only two years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you would expect, things got tough\nafter her father&#8217;s death, and she got married to a Khoikhoi native who drummed\nfor a living. Together, they had a child who didn\u2019t live for long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that time, the Dutch settlers came\ninto conflict with the local Khoikhoi community, and in one of those battles,\nSarah&#8217;s fianc\u00e9e was murdered. As the locals continued being absorbed into the\ncolonial labour system, Sarah was sold into slavery to one Pieter Willem Cezar,\nwho moved her over to Capetown to serve as his brother\u2019s domestic servant. It\nwas here that her Dutch masters called her <em>Saartjie,\n<\/em>the Dutch version of Sara. <\/p>\n\n\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout-key=\"+46+pu+13-bm+gn\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5707883997090848\" data-ad-slot=\"9113101671\"><\/ins><br>\n<script><br \/>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<br \/>\n<\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>The\n\u2018contract\u2019 to work in Europe <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz.png\" alt=\"\nsarah baartman hips\" class=\"wp-image-3179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz.png 680w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz-350x233.png 350w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz-477x318.png 477w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz-302x201.png 302w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz-100x66.png 100w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/CPQXQaz-332x221.png 332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is alleged that on October 29<sup>th<\/sup>, 1810, Sara signed a contract with William Dunlop<em> <\/em>to accompany him, Cezar and Hendrik, to England for work. The agreement terms allegedly stated that she had signed to;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Serve\nas a domestic worker<\/li><li>Use\nher body to pose as an exhibit for public entertainment <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>She would be given her wages for domestic work, receive a percentage of the earnings from exhibitions, and be free to return to South Africa after five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later on, though, doubts would be cast\non whether this contract was ever signed at all. First of all, Sara was\ncompletely illiterate, and aside from that, she came from a community that had\nno background in writing or record keeping. The lady was, therefore, incapable\nof appending her signature on a document of such magnitude. Second, the Cezar\nbrothers were broke at that time, and most scholars believe they must have\ncleverly trafficked Sara to exploit her physical features for financial gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Extra\nOrdinary buttocks <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Isfqkcaj.jpg\" alt=\"sarah baartman images\" class=\"wp-image-3181 img-responsive\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Isfqkcaj.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Isfqkcaj-300x245.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sara&#8217;s extra ordinary buttocks and her unique skin color marked her as an object of fascination by the Europeans who regarded themselves as a superior race. Dunlop knew for sure that with her bizarre rear extension, this lady would be an instant sensation in London where the curious public would pay to come in and see her on display. While in London, she was displayed half-naked in a cage measuring one meter wide and half meters high, and when word went around that she was there, people from various parts of Europe trooped in to entertain their eyes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Human\nrights lobby groups intervene <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1655895_115255402199128_2994169147639407213_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3183 img-responsive\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1655895_115255402199128_2994169147639407213_n.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1655895_115255402199128_2994169147639407213_n-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Coincidentally, during this time, the\ncampaign against slavery was getting hot, and as a result, Sara Baartman\u2019s treatment\nelicited grave concerns from various human rights lobby groups. Even though her\nslave masters were dragged to court, their case wasn&#8217;t fully prosecuted. They\nserved the court with a document that had supposedly been signed by their slave\nbinding or committing herself to the contract. Before the case, Dunlop also\nbrainwashed her to testify that it was in her best interest to be in the\nbusiness, and anything that Dunlop and his friends were doing to her didn&#8217;t\nmerit mistreatment.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout-key=\"+46+pu+13-bm+gn\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5707883997090848\" data-ad-slot=\"9113101671\"><\/ins><br>\n<script><br \/>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<br \/>\n<\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since the alleged contract had been forged professionally, the human rights group lost the case. Still, they managed to persuade the courts to have the agreement amended to make her entitled to better conditions like a higher stake in the profits and warm clothes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transfer\nto France <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"628\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/11341_115162995541702_4092279922599501266_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3184 img-responsive\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/11341_115162995541702_4092279922599501266_n.jpg 628w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/11341_115162995541702_4092279922599501266_n-300x249.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After serving for four years in London, she was moved to France in September 1814. In France, Hendrik Cezar sold her to one Mr. Reaux.&nbsp; Baartman\u2019s new master showcased animals, and as you would expect, the Frenchman displayed her cage alongside his beasts.&nbsp; Owing to the public fascination with Sara&#8217;s body features, Reaux&#8217;s daily income dramatically went up as Frenchmen and women trooped in for a view. Later on, he would move her around Paris while exhibited in the same cage with a baby rhinoceros. She would occasionally be ordered to sit, stand, and turn around in a similar way an animal is treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some instances, Baartman would be\ndisplayed almost naked, only covering her womanhood with a little loincloth.\nAnd note that she would only be allowed to tie the loincloth after threatening\nto go on strike otherwise if her masters had their way; she was to stand there\nabsolutely naked. She was later nicknamed <em>Hottentot\nVenus<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his greed for more money, Reaux would hire out the poor lady for sex to the highest bidder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Used\nas a scientific specimen <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, a naturalist called George\nCuvier asked Reaux if he would permit for Sara to be considered a science\nspecimen and studied. Reaux must have charged him for this after which he\nallowed the lady to be examined by French Psychologists, Zoologists, and\nanatomists<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George Curvier concluded that Baartman was the link between humans and animals and hence reinforced the skewed imagination that Africans were lesser humans.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Her\ndeath <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sara Baartman\u2019s death came in 1826 when she was only 26 years old. It is not clear what killed her, whether it was a sexually transmitted infection, alcoholism, pneumonia, or smallpox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Curvier got permission from the authorities to make a plaster cast of her body and display it at the <em>Mus\u00e9e de&nbsp;l&#8217;Homme, <\/em>where it was preserved until 1974. It helps to mention that Curvier also put her genitals and brains in different jars and kept them beside her body.&nbsp; In 1981, Paleontologist, Stephen Jay Gould would write Sara\u2019s story in his book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/biopolitics.kom.uni.st\/Stephen%20Jay%20Gould\/The%20Mismeasure%20of%20Man%20(148)\/The%20Mismeasure%20of%20Man%20-%20Stephen%20Jay%20Gould.pdf\">The Mismeasure of Man<\/a><\/em> where he condemned Sara&#8217;s treatment and racial science as an evil ideology. <\/p>\n\n\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout-key=\"+46+pu+13-bm+gn\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5707883997090848\" data-ad-slot=\"9113101671\"><\/ins><br>\n<script><br \/>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<br \/>\n<\/script><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Nelson Mandela requests for her remains more than\n200 years later<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/EKOa9tNWwAAn7Pn.jpg\" alt=\"sarah baartman museum\" class=\"wp-image-3185 img-responsive\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/EKOa9tNWwAAn7Pn.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.newsly.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/EKOa9tNWwAAn7Pn-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After ANC\u2019s\nvictory in the 1994 elections, President Nelson Mandela requested for Sara\u2019s\nremains for her to be given an honorable send-off. The French government\ndragged its feet at this as they drafted a carefully worded bill that would\ncushion them against any serious claims.
