Emmanuel Wanyonyi Clinches First-Ever Diamond League Victory in Oslo

Kenyan middle-distance star Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivered a stunning performance at the Diamond League meet in Oslo, claiming his first-ever win in the prestigious series.

The 20-year-old raced to victory in the men’s 800m final with an impressive time of 1:42.78, holding off fierce competition from Mohamed Attaoui and Olympic bronze medallist Djamel Sedjati. Attaoui clocked 1:42.90 while Sedjati finished third with a time of 1:43.06.

Dominant from the Start

Wanyonyi maintained a commanding presence throughout the race, staying close to the pacemaker in the early stages. He surged ahead confidently in the final lap, creating a visible gap. Despite fading slightly in the final 100 meters, the Kenyan dug deep to secure a narrow but significant win.

This marks a major milestone in Wanyonyi’s career, as he builds momentum toward the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Notably absent from the Oslo race was his archrival, Marco Arop, who remains one of the top names to watch in the upcoming global meet.

Comeback After Rabat

The win comes just weeks after Wanyonyi placed third in the Rabat Diamond League on May 25, where he was edged out by Tshepiso Masalela of Botswana and Max Burgin of Great Britain. The Oslo victory signals a return to form and reinforces his status as a leading contender in the 800m.

With his eyes now set on the world title—and possibly the 800m world record—Wanyonyi is proving he has what it takes to dominate the track in 2025.
